Chris Wicht Camp is located in Surprise Canyon in Panamint Valley. It burned to the ground September 2006. The clean up was organized as a joint effort by Friends Of Panamint Valley and the BLM. Eighty-nine people showed up for the clean up including 69 volunteers, 13 Student Conservation Association employees (contracted by the BLM) and 7 employees from the BLM.
Other than On The Rocks, members of CORVA, Cal 4 Wheel, Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, Point Mugu 4 Wheelers, Blue Ribbon Coalition, United Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, The Tin Binders and local residents were there to help. We filled three huge 40 cubic yard roll off boxes with junk and hauled away eight junk vehicles.
Following the clean-up, several of us hiked up Surprise Canyon a mile or so to get an idea of what other members of the club got an opportunity to do prior to 2001 when Surprise Canyon was shut down to off highway vehicles...the only access into Panamint City. Scott, Mike and Chris took a slight detour on the way home to check out Golar Wash and Barker Ranch.
